This Week's Grocery Trip

I didn't do to well shopping this week. I saved some $, don't get me wrong, but only $51! I spent a total of $176, leaving me with only $224 left for December (trying to keep it at $400 for the month).

Things I KNOW I did wrong:
1. I didn't research the weekly sales fliers (BAD BAD mistake).
2. I didn't have enough time to go through my coupons fully.
3. I just had a general list instead of a detailed one.
4. The Hubbeast kept saying "Oooooh, look! The New York strips are reduced"! Or, "We need peanut butter & it's on sale"!
5. I went on an empty stomach!

I DID, however, stock up on a lot of items! Here is a list of some of the items I bought for the stockpile ( what I remember anyhow):

Sugar
Veggies
ground beef
boneless, skinless chicken breasts
shampoo & conditioner
air freshener
scented candles
yogurt
popcorn (got a GREAT deat- BOGO & coupon)
coffee
tp
butter
macaroni & cheese
cheddar cheese

Some things that I completely forgot to pic up:
eggs
wine
bottled water

So, Jeff will stop and pick up those few items. And, Lesson learned- make sure I PLAN for the shopping! LOL

Menu Plan Monday

This week I will be trying some new recipes. I will report back on how the family likes/dislikes them (I've got 2 EXTREMELY picky people in the house). I am also getting back to the lower-carb diet that my doctor put me on to help control my PCOS. So, no pasta, potatoes, rice, etc... for me, I'll just eat more of the veggies ;o)

*Monday:
  Egg Noodles
  Green Beans

*Tuesday:
  Chili
  Cornbread

*Wednesday:
  Potatoes
  Brussels Sprouts

*Thursday:
  Salad

*Friday:
  Our 16th Anniversary!
Eating out and the company Christmas party.
Girls will both be out with friends!

*Saturday:
  Oven Baked French Fries

*Sunday:
  BBQ Chicken
  Rice
  Corn

Thats the plan for now. I REALLY need to start planning for breakfasts and lunches, it would my shopping SO much easier. I'll try for that goal next week!

Thanksgiving

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving yesterday!

Mine started with me waking up sick, not a good sign. The Hubbeast had to run a get a few forgotten items at the grocer store (how did I forget things this week)? And he picked up Summer who, also came home sick. I got the deviled eggs done and in the fridge, the bacon crescent appetizers baked and Summer made the pumpkin pie. Then I got a surprising phone call- my oldest son Michael was going to make it for Thanksgiving dinner! it was so nice to see him- I hadn't seen him in months and I swear that he had gotten taller! (Even though he said that at 24, he thinks that all of his growing is finished).

I got the rest of the dinner finished by 3 pm and we all ate WAY too much! The turkey turned out extremely moist since I injected it with melted butter (my little secret). Michael commented on the dressing, saying he had forgotten how good my cooking was. The Hubbeast cleaned the kitchen, dishes & all (he is toooo sweet)! While we waited for our stomachs to settle. A few hours later we had apple pie (Michael's favorite), pumpkin pie (the Hubbeast's favorite), cherry pie (Kirstey's favorite) and pecan pie (Summer's favorite). I'm not a sweets person unless it is cheesecake and I didn't feel like making one this year.

Then Michael had to go home ;o(

It was a terrific day! The only way it could have been better was if my youngest son Robert was able to be home. We all missed him. But, we called him during dinner and talked while he has his Thanksgiving with his Father's family.

I hope your day was as special as mine!

Gratituesday

What am I grateful for today? I would have to say close friends. Whenever you need anything they are always there. If you need a reality check, they are there to provide it. If you need a shoulder to cry on- you always have that comfort. And, when you need a good laugh, they know just what to say. So, today I am grateful for my close friends.

Slow-Cooker Saturday & Shopping Sunday

We had a good weekend! The Hubbeast had put in for vacation pay and the check was deposited Friday. He had 80 hours of vacation time and it turned out to me more than we expected. So, now we are prepared for the hospital bills when they arrive. We also went ahead and paid all of the bills even if they weren't due yet. And, I did some MAJOR grocery shopping!

At Lowe's Foods our total came to $97.28 after $76.00 in savings!
At Food Lion our total came to $136.47 after $63.99 in savings!

So,  we got $373.74 worth of groceries for $233.75, total savings of $139.99! And my pantry is overflowing! I knew that we will have to be really tight with groceries for the rest of the year so, I stocked as much as I could. In the coming weeks, we will only need meats, milk, bread, eggs and yogurt each week! I already have everything I need for Christmas/Yule dinner except for the main course!

Also, my slow-cooker quit on me Saturday. We thought about running to Wally World to get a new one but, I know that they are going to have some great sales this Friday so, I will wait until then (but I MISS my slow-cooker)! That was my weekend, how was yours?

Just An Update On Summer & The Hubbeast

An update on Summer: She went for a EEG on Monday, it was the last test they needed to. We got the results yesterday and it was completely normal. So, they can find no reason for her seizure besides her migraine. We go this afternoon to see her new neurologist, Dr. Zen (I LOVE that name- he has to be the most mellow doctor around), and to see what treatment she is going to be put on. She is SO tired of me being so protective (I make her keep the baby monitor turned on in her room at all times so I can hear if something is wrong- and she HATES it)! I'm sure she will be happy to get back to just being a teenager and being able to hang out with her friends. And the Hubbeast and I will be able to relax a little and maybe I will finally be able to sleep- it's been a week with about 3 hours sleep total for me.

The Hubbeast is doing just fine. He went to the Dr. Tuesday for his panic attack. She wants to see him 2 more times over the next 2 weeks before she decides if he is going to need medication. She is thinking that it was the fear of losing Summer that caused the panic attack since he has no history of them. Hopefully this was a one-time-deal for it all!

Thanksgiving Will Be From My Stockpile!

After last week's happenings, I realized that this week's grocery funds went to cover the emergency room fees. So, I got to thinking of how I was going to feed us for the week, let alone on Thanksgiving. Then, last night a friend called and asked if I wanted her extra turkey. She has a 16 lber that she will not be able to use. She will be bringing it Tuesday so I can have it thawed by Thursday.

Then, I started thinking about the side dishes that we usually have. Every year it is the same. Mashed potatoes, dressing, green beans, gravy, cranberry sauce, biscuits, and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. I check my pantry and realized that I have everything but the cranberry sauce, whipped cream and pie crust. I can make the pie crust with ingredients that I always keep on hand instead of buying a pre-made one. The cranberry sauce, whipped cream and buttermilk I need for the biscuits are all on sale right now.

I am SO glad that I have been stocking up on sale items over the last few weeks! My stockpile isn't the biggest but I will be able to have our traditional Thanksgiving meal and only have to buy meats and a few other items for the rest of the week. This will be two weeks in a row where the stockpile has been a blessing!

Gratituesday

After the hectic past few days, I realize that I have SO very much to be grateful for! I am so lucky that everyone in my family is here today, alive and well. When you are faced with a life & death emergency, it changes your perspective, makes you realize what is truly important in life.  The Hubbeast and I have been so caught up in getting this bill paid, that bill paid, etc... that it was consuming us. Thursday was our wake up call.
I don't care if we loose the internet, cable, cell phones, etc... we are all HERE and that is all that matters!
So, where you feel like life is overwhelming you. When life, bills, etc... are too much. Look around at what you have! Your Family! If you lost them, would all those things really matter?

What are you grateful for?

Please Keep Us In Your Prayers!

Well, we have had a heck of a week here. Thursday afternoon my youngest daughter Summer came home from school complaining of the right side of her mouth and right arm being numb. I thought it was just a side effect of her migraines (she has had them since the age of 4). But, as I watched her, she started slurring her words and losing use of her right arm. I called the Hubbeast to rush home & I called her neurologist. The Hubbeast rushed her to the closest urgent care clinic while I waited for the doctor to return my call.

Her neurologist said that it did sound like an atypical migraine and told me to give her 2 Aleve and 1 benydryl.
She got home & everything seemed fine until I heard what sounded like a bowling ball being dropped in her room. I got her door unlocked to find her having a seizure. Needless to say things got crazy. I literally thought I was watching her die. Things are a blur after that. I'm not sure how long I was there talking to her before the rescue squad arrived, I lost all track of time. She came around & actually walked to the stretcher.I rode with her in the ambulance while my oldest daughter drove the Hubbeast to the hospital.

We were at the hospital only a minute or two when a nurse came running back telling me that they had the Hubbeast in front. So, I ran to the front to find my oldest daughter Kirstey in tears. The Hubbeast was in a wheel chair,  hooked up to monitors and fighting the security guards to get out of the chair. He couldn't speak clearly and his hands were cramped up. I thought he was having a heart attack or a stroke. I sent Kirstey to be with Summer and tried to listen to everything the nurse was saying. Well, when I realized that he was hyperventilating & having a panic attack I tried to calm him down but it wasn't working. Finally, I just got in his face and started yelling at him to calm down. He seemed to respond to that & started calming down some. LOL. The security guard saw that I could handle him & left the room.

I got the Hubbeast into a room even though he wasn't cooperating and went back to check on Summer & Kirstey. Summer was still doing well, talking on her cell phone & texting. Kirstey was still shook up and I found out that the Hubbeast had been trying to jump out of the car while she was racing to the hospital! She managed to drive 60 miles and hour, be on the phone to the Hubbeast's boss getting directions, and keep her Father from jumping out of the car! She deserved to be upset!

It took about 5 hours for the Hubbeast to come out of whatever was going on and I had to get in his face again when they needed to give him a shot (he is TERRIFIED of needles) I told him that if he didn't take the shot I would not let him in the room with Summer and I would have the security hold him down if need be. You should have seen his face- if looks could kill I would have been dead on the spot! LOL, but he took the shot!  Summer was getting checked & CAT scanned, etc. So, I was back and forth between room 6 and room 29 LOL. They found a spot on the right-front temporal lobe on Summer's brain but wasn't sure what it was. Her neurologist thought it was safe to send her home, however. We left about 2 am Friday morning. I sat up all night next to her bed, watching her sleep terrified that she would seize again.

Friday her neurologist sent her to the emergency room at Duke hospital. The nurses, doctors & surgical team were already notified that she was coming. And, after another CAT scan and MRI, they couldn't find anything abnormal! Not even the spot they has seen the night before! Which was terrific news! But, since we didn't find any clue to why she had a seizure I am still worried that it will happen again. I slept in her floor that night and every time she moved I woke up.

Last night, I slept on the couch with the baby monitor hooked up so I could hear. I am doing the same tonight. She thinks that I am being too protective and I think it is getting on her nerves but, I told her that I am just being a Mom and she could get over it LOL I will worry until we find the cause of her seizure.

The Hubbeast is doing well as long as her doesn't talk about what happened. Every time her does, he starts slurring his speech again and has a hard time getting the words out. I am not sure whats going on with that. I think that he just cannot handle the idea of what happened. He has an appointment Monday also.

I'm beat but I can't sleep. I thought about taking one of my sleeping pills but, then if something happens I won't be functioning 100%. I really need a BIG glass of wine (or three) but again, I have to stay level headed right now.

So, if you have a moment, please say a prayer that we will find the reason this happened to my little girl..

Thanks to everyone!
Lora

Works For Me Wednesday

What works for me to help me & the Hubbeast to stay married for 16 years &  together for almost 21 years.

Marriage is hard, anyone who has been married for any amount of time knows that fact. For some people it doesn't get easier with time. I've seen so many couple live in misery even though they truly love each other.
Now, the Hubbeast and I don't always see things the same way, we do have some very heated discussions. But, thats what they are, discussions NOT fights! The thing that helps us is to always think before you speak  ESPECIALLY when you are angry! Once something comes out of your mouth, you cannot take it back! And, works can hurt worse than anything else! Not only does this work in a marriage but in dealing with anyone! Your children, co-workers, friends, etc.......

JMHO!

November's Grocery Budget

Well, the Hubbeast and I have set down and talked about what we can afford for groceries. With an extra $125.00  being taken out of the Hubbeast's check every week for the next 6 months, we have to be careful. I have applied for a few jobs for nights & weekends but so far, nothing. It really isn't surprising since I haven't held an "outside of the house" job for the past 18 years. Hopefully something will come soon. I want to work at night and/or on the weekends so I can still be home with the daycare kids during the day and my teenagers in the evening.

So, we budgeted $100.00 a week for groceries. Hopefully I will make enough in daycare pay to cover that. The Hubbeast has been volunteering to take call on weekends to earn some extra. So far, he has been able to compensate for the deducted amount but, the overtime isn't guaranteed this time of year. (He works in the commercial  HV/AC & Refrigeration industry).

This situation is really a blessing in disguise. We have been living "high - on - the - hog" for quite some time. If I wanted to spend $250 a week on groceries, it wasn't a problem. If we wanted new clothes- we just went & bough them. The girls asked for money and it was given. Now, we are all having to learn to budget & save. Which is something that we should have been doing all along, and we definitely should have been teaching our children instead of spoiling them rotten! And, if we still follow what we learn through this AFTER the deductions stop, we should be able to have a killer savings account in no time!

I Guess it's time to learn a lesson- LOL

Shopping Sunday

This week's shopping was a total overstock purchase. We didn't really "NEED" anything for the upcoming week besides kitty litter so, I thought I would use the budgeted $100.00 to stock up on the sales. We also only were able to get to one store due to the Hubbeast being on-call for work. Here is a list of what I purchased:

  • Bounty paper towels (8 double rolls) for $7.50 each
  • 10 cans of green beans for .50 a can
  • 10 cans of corn for .50 a can
  • 5 cans of Del Monte fruit for $1.00 a can
  • 3 cans of evaporated milk for .69 a can
  • 5 cans of tuna for .79 a can
  • 4 cans of soup for .50 each
  • 1 can of pumpkin for $1.00
  • 4 large jars of Duke's Mayo for $1.80 each (BOGO)
  • 2 boxes of saltine crackers for $1.50 a box
  • 3 4-packs of Bryers Yogurt Inspirations for $1.75 each
  • Salami for .99
  • 3 lbs of butter for $2.50
  • 3 boxes of Velveeta Shells & Cheese for $1.66 each
  • Glade Candle for $2.50 plus the scented oil refills for free
  • Luzianne Tea for $1.70
  • Creamer for $1.50
  • 5 lbs of sugar for .99
  • 3 packages of Charmin TP (12 mega rolls) for $4.50 each
  • Tidy Cats Kitty Litter for $6.00
  • Diamond Walnuts for $1.00
  • 2 large hershey chocolate bars for $1.00 each (the Hubbeast threw them in, I swear)
  • 2 boxes of Turkey flavored stuffing mix for $1.00 each
  • 1 package of Kielbasa for $2.50
  • 1 loaf of bread for $1.39
  • 1 package of Chili seasoning for $1.29
  • 2 bottles of soda for $1.00 each
  • 1 package of white American sandwich cheese for $1.50
  • 1 package of yeast for $1.50
There is a few things more that I cannot remember but I got it all for $117.20
And I saved a total of $43.84

Not as good as I hoped ( I went over my budget by $17.20) but, 99% of it was for my stockpile pantry!

Next week will definitely be a meats week. I hope they have a good sale!

Slow-Cooker Saturday

Today I am using my slow-cooker to cook a 5 lb. chuck roast. Now, I didn't really have a recipe, just threw in what I thought would work together. We will see how it goes.

Impromptu Roast Beef
*5 lb. chuck roast
* 2 tsp. garlic powder
* 2 tsp. ground black pepper
* 1 can  condensed french onion soup
* 1 soup can on water
* 1/4 cup Moore's Original Beef Marinade

Rub the beef roast with 1 tsp each of garlic powder & pepper on both sides.
Add the Moore's Marinade, soup & water & turn over to cover the other side.
Cook on low 8 to 10 hours or high (which is what I am using) for 6 to 8.

I'll let you know how it turns out later after we try it. Wish me luck!

UPDATE:  The roast was a BIG hit! The Hubbeast LOVED the flavor and said that it was even "beefier" than usual-LOL. Must have been the marinade. Now to see how I can change it up some (I usually never make a recipe exactly the same twice- I have to add/change something). Maybe some mushrooms, potatoes, or maybe I'll try adding a little coffee to the sauce (I know it sounds crazy BUT, it really is yummy with beef). We will have to see next time I make it ;o)

Tip Day Thursday

Since I have had a hectic week, here are some more tips for the slow-cooker that I have personally used and found effective..

1. If you have a white ceramic crock and it gets stained, add hot water with 1/4 cup bleach and let it sit overnight, when you wake up in the morning, rinse well and your crock will look brand new!

2. Also, if you have a lingering smell in the crock you can use either some vinegar added to hot water or use a couple of tablespoons of baking soda to the crock, put on the lid, and rinse in the morning. The smell should be gone!

Of course, don't add anything else if you use the bleach solution! Hope these help!

And, I'm happy to say that my Father is home and doing good. When I talked to him today he sounded so much better! The sitting & being still is driving him crazy and he is antsy to get back to work at the daycare but, they will not release him for 6 weeks. So his wife is bringing up his sewing machine (yes, he sews & quilts) and he is going to make new sheets for the daycare cots & cribs.  Anything to occupy his mind & hands he said! LOL- that's my Dad!

Day Of Relief

Well, after visiting my Father last night I feel so much better. Yesterday was extremely stressful and I spent most of the day on the phone & crying. When we got to the hospital last night, my Dad seemed better than he sounded on the phone. He was keeping food down, his fever had broken and he had one breathing treatment left to do before his second set of x-rays. Then, he started his usual story-telling and joking. I knew then that he would be fine. He may have to go home catheterized for a time but he will be OK.

Thanks for everyone's prayers & well wished. I will back to my normal blogging tomorrow, with my teen daughters being home alone I have a disaster for a house. LOL

A Day Of Worry

Just a quick post today. My Father went into the hospital yesterday for a in/out patient procedure. Well he is having complications and I will be running to the hospital tonight. Keep him in your thoughts if you would please.

    Eat-Out

     Left Overs

* Sunday:
    Hot Dogs with chili

Shopping Sunday

Well, today was our weekly shopping trip and I didn't do as well as I had hoped. Last week we spent less than $50.00 so I knew this week would be more. I had budgeted $75.00 for Lowe's Foods and another $50.00 for Food Lion. I did realy well at Lowe's Foods and spent $74.00 (Saved $60.00 in coupons). But, when we wnt to Food Lion, it came up to $93.00! I'm still in shock! I stuck to my list but, forgot that I needed kitty litter and cat food (which totals about $32.00 for both). So, even with subtracting that amount, I was still over by $11.00. I did save another $58.00 between MVP and coupons. So, total for the week is:

* $285.00 worth of groceries for $168.00 OOP- total savings of $117.00 for the week! Not too bad if you look at it that way ;o)

Now, for the next 2 weeks, I will have to keep to $75.00 to $100.00 a week so we can make the house payment. With what I already have stockpiled, it shouldn't be to difficult.

How was your shopping this week?
